COMP 6660 · Enterprise Cybersecurity Unit 4 Learning Outcomes
The authoritative learning outcomes for Unit 4 — Enterprise Security Architectures and Technologies — together with their lesson coverage, module mapping, and assessment alignment.
01 Unit learning outcomes
Upon completion of Unit 4, students will be able to:
U4.1 — Architecture design
- Design enterprise security architectures using defence-in-depth and segmentation.
- Define security domains, trust boundaries, and control placement.
U4.2 — Technology evaluation
- Evaluate security technologies including firewalls, VPNs, IDS, IPS, SIEM, and XDR.
- Assess detection coverage, operational load, and integration against enterprise requirements.
U4.3 — Control recommendation
- Recommend appropriate controls for a given enterprise context.
- Document architectural decisions and their trade-offs.
How to read these outcomes
The outcomes above are the authoritative statements for Unit 4. They are verified by Forum 4, Assignment 2, and Parts B and C of the final examination.

06 Progression
- U4.1 — Architecture design Applied in Unit 5 to platform-specific contexts (cloud, containers); revisited in Module 3, Part C of the final examination.
- U4.2 — Technology evaluation Extended in Unit 5 (cloud-native detection) and Module 3, Lesson 6.7 (incident response).
- U4.3 — Control recommendation Integrated in Assignment 2 and the final examination; reinforced in Module 3 governance discussions.
Do I need hands-on experience with firewalls or SIEM?
No. The unit examines these technologies from an evaluation perspective. You are not required to configure firewalls, deploy SIEM, or operate a SOC. The emphasis is on understanding what each technology does, where it fits, and how to assess whether it meets enterprise requirements.
How does Unit 4 relate to Zero Trust?
Zero Trust was introduced in Module 1, Lesson 2.7. Unit 4 provides the network and detection architecture that makes Zero Trust work in practice: segmentation, identity-aware firewalls, east–west traffic control, and continuous monitoring. Lesson 4.4 explicitly examines the shift from perimeter VPNs toward zero-trust access.
Where can I find the module-level outcomes?
