Self-Paced Learning and Course Timelines
TrustOpen is famous for self-paced learning β but that doesn't mean "no deadlines." It means you set the pace, within a clearly defined contract period. This lesson explains how it works.
1. What "Self-Paced" Really Means
In a traditional course, everyone moves at the same speed. In a self-paced course at TrustOpen :
- You choose when you study each week.
- You choose how fast you work through the material.
- You decide when to attempt assignments (within the contract window).
Self-pacing is powerful, but it comes with a trade-off: you must create the structure that a classroom would otherwise provide. Without a plan, self-pacing can slide into procrastination.
2. Contract Dates β Your Study Window
Every TrustOpen course has a contract start date and a contract end date. Together they define the window within which you must complete the course.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Contract Start | The day your course officially begins and materials become available. |
| Contract End | The final day on which you can submit work or write exams. |
| Course Length | Typically 6 months for a 3-credit course, but varies. |
| Extensions | In some cases, an extension may be requested β but plan to finish on time. |
Aim to finish two weeks before your contract end date. That buffer protects you from illness, work surprises, and technical issues.
3. Pacing Strategies That Work
Divide the Course
Break units into weekly chunks β e.g., 1 unit per week for 12 weeks.
Schedule Assignments
Mark each assignment deadline 2 weeks before the contract end.
Track Weekly Progress
Sunday check-ins: what did you finish? What's next?
Build a Buffer
Add one "flex week" for every 6 weeks of planned study.
