COMP 6660 · Enterprise Cybersecurity Unit 1 Learning Outcomes
The authoritative learning outcomes for Unit 1 — Foundations of Enterprise Cybersecurity — together with their lesson coverage, module mapping, and assessment alignment.
01 Unit learning outcomes
Upon completion of Unit 1, students will be able to:
U1.1 — Objectives and principles
- Explain cybersecurity objectives and principles.
- Apply the CIA triad, authenticity, accountability, privacy, and non-repudiation to enterprise scenarios.
U1.2 — Enterprise information assets
- Define enterprise information assets.
- Classify data assets, information systems, critical infrastructure, and intellectual property.
U1.3 — Cybersecurity risk
- Analyse cybersecurity risks affecting organizations.
- Identify threat actors and evaluate their motivations.
U1.4 — Frameworks and models
- Evaluate cybersecurity frameworks and models, including NIST CSF, NIST RMF, ISO/IEC 27001, and defence-in-depth.
- Select frameworks appropriate to organisational needs.
U1.5 — Posture assessment
- Assess organizational cybersecurity posture.
- Analyse documented breaches and identify success and failure factors.
How to read these outcomes
The outcomes above are the authoritative statements for Unit 1. They are drawn from the course development plan and are verified by Forum 1, Assignment 1, and Part A of the final examination. Their relationship to the module outcomes and course learning outcomes appears in Sections 03 and 04 below.
02 Lesson coverage
Each unit outcome is developed across one or more lessons. The table below shows where each outcome is introduced and reinforced.
| Outcome | Introduced in | Developed in |
|---|---|---|
| U1.1 — Objectives and principles | Lesson 1.1 | Lesson 1.3 |
| U1.2 — Enterprise information assets | Lesson 1.2 | Lesson 1.2 |
| U1.3 — Cybersecurity risk | Lesson 1.1 | Lesson 1.4 |
| U1.4 — Frameworks and models | Lesson 1.5 | Lesson 1.5 |
| U1.5 — Posture assessment | Lesson 1.5 | Lesson 1.6 |
03 Mapping to module outcomes
Unit 1 outcomes contribute to Module 1 outcomes M1.1–M1.8. The table below shows which module outcomes each unit outcome supports.
| Unit outcome | Module outcomes supported |
|---|---|
| U1.1 — Objectives and principles | M1.1 (scope and strategic importance), M1.8 (apply principles) |
| U1.2 — Enterprise information assets | M1.2 (classify assets) |
| U1.3 — Cybersecurity risk | M1.3 (analyse risk), M1.6 (threat actors) |
| U1.4 — Frameworks and models | M1.4 (compare and select frameworks) |
| U1.5 — Posture assessment | M1.5 (assess posture), M1.7 (breach analysis) |
04 Mapping to course learning outcomes
Unit 1 introduces three of the nine course learning outcomes and partially develops two others. The authoritative course-level statements are published on the course learning outcomes page.
| CLO | Statement | Coverage in Unit 1 |
|---|---|---|
| CLO1 | Define the scope, objectives, principles, and strategic importance of enterprise cybersecurity. | Introduced and developed |
| CLO2 | Analyse threats, vulnerabilities, risks, and attack vectors. | Introduced |
| CLO3 | Evaluate cryptographic, authentication, authorization, and access-control technologies. | Not addressed (Unit 2) |
| CLO4 | Design and assess enterprise cybersecurity architectures and controls. | Introduced (frameworks and defence-in-depth) |
| CLO5 | Apply cybersecurity principles to secure enterprise systems and services. | Introduced |
| CLO6 | Develop governance, risk, compliance, and policy frameworks. | Not addressed (Module 3) |
| CLO7 | Evaluate incident response, continuity, and resilience strategies. | Not addressed (Module 3) |
| CLO8 | Assess emerging cybersecurity technologies, trends, and challenges. | Not addressed (Modules 2–3) |
| CLO9 | Conduct scholarly research and communicate findings effectively. | Practised (Forum 1; Assignment 1) |
05 Assessment alignment
Unit 1 outcomes are verified by the following assessment components. Every unit outcome is assessed at least once.
| Outcome | Forum 1 | Assignment 1 | Final exam |
|---|---|---|---|
| U1.1 — Objectives and principles | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| U1.2 — Enterprise information assets | ✓ | ✓ | — |
| U1.3 — Cybersecurity risk | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| U1.4 — Frameworks and models | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| U1.5 — Posture assessment | ✓ | ✓ | — |
06 Progression
Unit 1 outcomes establish the vocabulary used throughout the course. The diagram below shows how they connect forward.
- U1.1–U1.2 — Vocabulary and assets Used in Unit 2 to frame cryptographic and access-control selection; reused throughout Modules 2 and 3.
- U1.3 — Risk Developed in depth in Module 2, Unit 3, as risk becomes an analytical discipline; revisited in Module 3 as a governance concern.
- U1.4 — Frameworks Applied in Assignment 1 and again in Assignment 3, where NIST CSF and ISO/IEC 27001 are integrated with Zero Trust.
- U1.5 — Posture Reused in breach case studies and in Part C of the final examination, where posture assessment is required.
Are these outcomes examinable?
Yes. Every outcome in Unit 1 is examinable in the final examination where the matrix in Section 05 shows a ✓. U1.1, U1.3, and U1.4 are the most heavily weighted, but all five outcomes may appear in Part A.
Why are only five outcomes listed for a unit with six lessons?
Outcomes describe capabilities, not lessons. Several lessons contribute to a single outcome — for example, Lessons 1.5 and 1.6 both develop U1.5. Conversely, a single lesson may contribute to more than one outcome.
Where can I find the module-level outcomes?
Module outcomes are published on the Module 1 learning outcomes page, along with their mapping to the nine course learning outcomes.
