Unit overview
Unit 9 examines copyright, licensing, permission, attribution, authorship, plagiarism, academic integrity, provenance, and disclosure in AI-supported work. Public availability does not necessarily provide permission to copy, transform, upload, or reuse content. Attribution does not automatically establish permission, authorship, accuracy, or integrity. You will use the author-approved CREATE framework to document source rights, human contribution, AI assistance, verification, revision, approval, and disclosure.
Permission and source rights
Identify copyright, licence, terms, confidentiality, cultural authority, and other restrictions before using source material.
Authorship and contribution
Distinguish human intellectual contribution from AI assistance, editing, transformation, and generated content.
Integrity and disclosure
Document material assistance, verify claims and citations, preserve provenance, and avoid misleading representations.
Central idea: Permission, attribution, authorship, academic integrity, and AI-use disclosure answer different questions. Responsible work addresses each question separately.
Unit learning outcomes
By the end of Unit 9, you should be able to:
- Distinguish copyright, licence, permission, attribution, authorship, plagiarism, academic integrity, provenance, and AI-use disclosure.
- Explain why public accessibility does not automatically authorize copying, uploading, transformation, or reuse.
- Identify applicable source rights, licences, terms, confidentiality duties, and cultural or community authority.
- Distinguish attribution from permission and disclosure from verification.
- Identify substantive human intellectual contributions to purpose, reasoning, selection, interpretation, verification, revision, and approval.
- Recognize fabricated, inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading citations and quotations.
- Evaluate whether AI assistance is permitted for a course, assignment, workplace, publication, or professional context.
- Document prompts, outputs, retained material, verification, corrections, human contribution, and final responsibility.
- Prepare an accurate and proportionate AI-use disclosure.
- Identify integrity risks involving ghostwriting, impersonation, concealed assistance, false authorship, and responsibility laundering.
- Apply the author-approved CREATE framework to a bounded workflow.
- Complete Assignment 3 and add Unit 9 evidence to Assignment 1.
Unit 9 lessons
Complete the five lessons in order. The filenames are local to the dedicated Unit 9 folder.
Lesson 1 of 5 · 70–85 minutes9.1 Copyright, Licensing, and Permission
Distinguish public access from authorization and examine licences, terms, confidentiality, and limits on uploading, copying, and transformation.
Lesson 2 of 5 · 70–85 minutes9.2 Attribution, Citation, and Provenance
Trace sources, verify references and quotations, preserve provenance, and distinguish attribution from permission and evidence.
Lesson 3 of 5 · 70–85 minutes9.3 Human Authorship and Intellectual Contribution
Identify human purpose, reasoning, selection, interpretation, verification, revision, and accountable approval in AI-supported work.
Lesson 4 of 5 · 75–90 minutes9.4 Academic Integrity and AI-Use Disclosure
Interpret task-specific permissions, identify misrepresentation, and prepare accurate disclosure records for permitted assistance.
Lesson 5 of 5 · 90–120 minutes9.5 CREATE Integration and Responsible Publication
Apply CREATE to source rights, authorship, attribution, verification, disclosure, human approval, correction, and withdrawal.
Folder convention: Keep unit-09.html and t-01.html through t-05.html in the same dedicated Unit 9 Moodle folder.

Assessment milestones
Assignment 3: Responsible AI Case Analysis
Weight: 20%
Started: Unit 7, Week 5.
Complete now: Integrate FAIRER, PROTECT, CREATE, evidence, contestability, remedy, and a qualified recommendation.
Recommended submission: End of Module 3, Week 6.
Official Moodle due date and time: ____________________
Assignment 1: Journal continues
Reflect on permission, attribution, authorship, integrity, disclosure, provenance, and how CREATE changed personal and academic boundaries.
Recommended final submission: End of Module 6, Week 11.
Official Moodle due date and time: ____________________
Final Assignment 3 check: A disclosure statement does not correct unsupported claims, resolve missing permission, or transfer responsibility. Verify the work and meet each requirement separately.

Responsible-use boundaries and support
Boundaries
- Do not upload copyrighted, confidential, proprietary, unpublished, privileged, or culturally governed material without authority.
- Do not ask AI to imitate a living person, conceal assistance, fabricate citations, or create false authorship.
- Do not assume public availability, attribution, or educational use creates permission.
- Do not present AI output as independently verified or personally authored when that representation would be inaccurate.
- Do not use AI to produce personal reflection for Assignment 1.
Support and accessibility
- Use supplied records if live AI is unsuitable or unwanted.
- Contact the course coordinator for assignment and permitted-use questions.
- Use library or copyright support for sources, licences, citation, and permissions.
- Seek professional, legal, Indigenous, cultural, or institutional authority where applicable.
